Crawley Claims Ignorance of Captain Stokes' Provocative 'Frail Characters' Comments

The English opening batter Crawley suggested he had no knowledge of comments made by skipper Stokes regarding the dressing room as no place for "those lacking fortitude".

Stokes made this message in several interviews following his team's defeat in the second Ashes against the Australians earlier this month.

In the lead-up to the third Test, where the visitors now face defeat at the earliest opportunity, Stokes noted he had allowed his message to "circulate freely" among the playing group.

"I've done all the talking in recent days that I needed to have done," remarked the England leader.

But, after the opener made a knock of 85 on the fourth day in the third Test, he stated: "I didn't see that."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. Our approach is to take anything stated in the press with a pinch of salt," he added.

Frank Discussions and Steady Philosophy

The captain issued his "weak men" observation after England were beaten in Brisbane to fall 2-0 down.

The England squad afterwards took a holiday to a Queensland resort between the second and the upcoming Tests.

Before the Adelaide contest, he said his players had held "raw" talks and he had urged them to "show a bit of dog" in their battle to remain alive in the Ashes battle.

Nevertheless, Crawley asserted the messaging from Stokes and coach McCullum had remained consistent with their previous three years in leadership.

"The atmosphere has been extremely upbeat, the same as always," said Crawley. "It's on maintaining positivity, playing our brand, with lots of freedom. We believed we were capable of an extraordinary feat going into this game."

Australia On the Verge of Rapid Series Victory

The opener's wicket late on Saturday was part of a decisive triple-strike by Australia off-spinner Lyon.

Lyon's triple strike in a short spell – he also bowled Brook and Stokes himself – left the chasing side 207-6 chasing a notional total of 435 runs.

This means, Australia need four wickets on the last day to secure an insurmountable 3-0 advantage with three Tests.

Defeat will extend the English team's drought in this country to 18 Tests and condemn them to a fourth straight away Ashes series loss.

The current battle will be completed in only eleven days of play – after England fell the first two Tests in rapid time respectively.

The last time 1921, when Australia completed victory in the UK in eight days, has the destination of the Ashes urn been determined so quickly. The hosts have also won in 11 days on two other occasions in the 21st century.

"It's disheartening," admitted the batsman. "Our goal was to win the Ashes and now we are staring down the barrel now."

"There will still be plenty to play for and we will certainly approach it like that," Crawley added.

"The challenge has been difficult. They're a very, very good team. It was inevitably tough touring here to face them. They were the favourites and have demonstrated their quality."

Ollie Pope's Place In Question

While Crawley's innings in the third Test likely secures doubts about his short-term place in the side, Pope looks under threat for his position in the fourth Test starting December 26th.

Pope was out for 17 in England's second knock on Saturday, extending his modest returns versus Australia.

Across 16 Ashes innings, the Surrey man has never made a half-century and boasts an average of 17.62.

Only one other English batsman since 1900 – Amiss – has played an equal number of innings in the top six in the Ashes and returned a lower average.

However, Crawley insisted any notion Pope is under the microscope comes from "the media" – referring to the press – "not inside the camp."

"We all know of his considerable talent," added Crawley. "He has had a good year if I'm honest."

"He has played several excellent innings. This is talk externally. There's no discussion like that on Ollie in the camp," he concluded.
