A fatal train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel critical opposition regarding the pace and handling of the country's major government projects.
The disaster occurred on the Interoceanic Train, a line built to link the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was created to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring commercial progress in the area.
“We are going to thoroughly investigate what caused this accident,” affirmed the national leader.
The official confirmed that, of the around 250 passengers on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in serious condition. The leader noted plans to travel to Oaxaca to speak with those involved.
Key Undertaking of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a signature infrastructure project of the former leader, whose time in office concluded the year before. This project was intimately linked to his leadership's economic goals for the southern region.
Another ambitious rail project from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the broader strategy to revitalize the economic fortunes of a historically poorer part of the country.
Building Management and Risks Apprehensions
The building of both railway systems was overseen by the nation's military, marking a significant growth of its responsibilities in national infrastructure. They were built at an fast-tracked speed, beating expectations to be at least partly opened before the end of that presidency.
However, this accelerated timeline had simultaneously fueled significant apprehensions over safety standards.
- Sunday's derailment was the third event on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This includes an prior collision this month when a train hit a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen several non-lethal derailments.
Demands for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the head of a major opposition party called for an urgent suspension in the construction and operation of all similar projects.
This halt was proposed pending a thorough technical review. The party declared that the situation "requires swift accountability."
In reaction, the head of state insisted that the train had been functioning in complete accordance with all safety requirements. Assurances were given that the government would remain "accountable" in both the development and running of these strategic projects.
